reviewed: 2008-10-22 Italian director Tinto Brass emerged as one of the most artful purveyors of erotic. He is best known for directing a majority of the infamous "Caligula." That movie was taken away from him in post production by Bob Guccione. Tinto Brass is a stylistic filmmaker who makes sex fun. His work as a soft-core auteur rivals and in many ways surpassed the work of director Radley Metzger. Cult Epics has released each of these films in the original director's cut for the first time in the US.
PRIVATE (2003)
CHEEKY! (2000)
FRIVOLOUS LOLA (1998)
This saucy tale is set in post WWII Italy. Lola is engaged to the baker's son. She wants to go ahead and celebrate the union before the wedding. Her fiancé wants to wait. Lola has some wild oats to sew before the wedding. She spends the time she has before the wedding spying on everyone she can find to watch and learn about sex. One of the sexiest scenes in the movie is actually a dance number! Lola cuts a rug with three GIs in a very memorable scene.
Picture Quality:
Both "Private" and "Cheecky" have excellent images. Sharp, well-saturated colors. Excellent flesh tones. "Frivolous Lola" on the other hand has some issues with colors. They are a bit washed out in many of the outdoor scenes.
Sound Quality:
No problems with the soundtrack.
Easter Eggs:
No Easter Eggs Found on Disc.
Extra Features:
The set includes a great interview with Tinto Brass. He explains his philosophy about erotica vs. pornography. I like the way he says erotic creates emotions while pornography just creates erections. The set also includes a fun Making Of featurette for "Private." There are several trailer and photo galleries.
Tinto Brass still makes the type of erotic film that flourished in the early 70s before hardcore killed of the genre. While this set doesn't include Mr. Brass' best work, it is a great way to discover his artistry.
